Definition of VM states

Orphaned VM:

  • VM is not registered in HTCondor and is also not registered with Cloudscheduler
    • Note one must check both condor.heprc and bellecs.heprc systems as they are independent
    • Solution - the VM must be manually deleted by a nova command or from the GUI

Lost VM:

  • VM is registered with HTCondor but not registered with Cloudscheduler
    • The VM may continue to run jobs
    • Solution - the VM must be retired from HTCondor manually

Idle VM:

  • The VM is registered with both HTCondor and Cloudscheduler but the running job is idle
    • Often the job is waiting for input files or data
    • Solution - kill the job

Error VM:

  • VMs in ERROR state in Cloudscheduler will be deleted after 1 hour (no action is required)
