How to acquire a new computer in the UVic HEP group

We can assist you in choosing an appropriate computer for your needs or the needs of your students. There are a limited set of supported hardware configurations for you to chose from (see below). You can get further information and initiate the purchase process by contacting hep-support email . You can also come by Elliot 201 for in person discussions. You will be asked to provide information about which account the desktop should be charged against.

HEP supported computers

Support is provided for the following computer types.

Standard Linux Desktops

These are Dell Optiplex Workstations with Intel core i5 processor, 4 GB memory, which are purchased as a standard configuration through the UVic Technology solution center. Each machine is installed with Scientific Linux and integrated into the HEP computing systems as a fully supported entity. This desktop meets all the security and purchasing requirements of UVic. Hardware is fully covered by warranty for 3 years. We also recommend 24 inch LCD monitors for each workstation.

  • The approximate cost of each workstation is $800+tax. The approximate cost of a monitor is $300+tax.
  • Home directories are hosted by departmental file servers and backed up.
  • Your home directory will be accessible from any HEP Standard Linux Desktop.
  • Units are installed with Scientific Linux 6.x (sl6.x) or sl7.x.
  • Standard equipment, with embedded TPM chip (UVic information security requirement), is purchased through UVic's TSC.
  • Hardware supported onsite.
  • Standard printer configuration.
  • No root access.
  • Custom software upon request.
  • Support through hep-support ticket system

Macbooks are are purchased via a special procedure that allows for educational discounts on the hardware. UVic institutional purchases of macbooks are no longer done via the UVic computer store. We will work with you to produce a configuration and initiate the required webreq procedure. For rough pricing and to browse hardware have a look at the Apple Store <- Do not initiate an order here, you will not be reimbursed . To start the procedure send email to the hep-support ticket system.

  • Assistance with standard printer configuration and TSM backups.
  • Limited software support. Users are meant to be mostly self supporting.
  • Hardware support provided under the terms of the Apple warranties for the particular product and done by UVic certified apple technicians.
  • Time capsules are NOT supported. We specifically recommend against them since we have enterprise backup tools that are already implemented and more reliable.
  • Support through hep-support ticket system

Windows desktops

  • Not supported in the HEP group.
  • Windows services may be provided by the Physics Department via Nik Zapantis (zapantis@uvic.ca)
